Hotel rating 2022: stronger accessibility and sustainability criteria

The last chapter of the revised grid holds new or modified criteria, some worth up to 5 points.

At first glance, the new hotel rating grid shows no major change. Yet the last chapter holds new or modified criteria, some of them heavily weighted (1 to 5 points).

Failing to meet them would mean a refused rating for a property. Here they are:

  • 225 — water flow reduction in every bathroom (1 point);
  • 226 — a way to reduce the amount of towels washed, in every room (2 points);
  • 227 — a way to reduce the amount of bed linen washed, in every room (2 points);
  • 232 — waste sorting available to guests (2 points);
  • 233 — waste sorting in place within the property (2 points);
  • 236 — use of at least one environmentally friendly product (1 point);
  • 237 — staff training in energy saving, water saving and waste management (5 points);
  • 239 — information for guests on low-impact transport (1 point);
  • 240 — at least three French, regional or local short-supply-chain products (5 points);
  • 241 — at least three fair-trade or organic products (5 points).

Criterion 237 will likely cause the most difficulty for operators outside a network or group able to provide this kind of training. Waiting times for such courses currently exceed three months, which will complicate re-rating from the second quarter of 2022.
